Kure Beach

Kure Beach
Kure Beach is located just south of Carolina Beach and is also lined with amazing beaches on one side and the Cape Fear River on the other. Kure Beach is located about 15 miles south of Wilmington, North Carolina and just north of Fort Fisher, North Carolina.
Kure Beach and Fort Fisher are both packed with history that dates back to the Civil war and also World War II. According to Wikipedia, "In World War IIon the night of July 24/25, 1943 a German U-boat fired at least 3 shells to attack the "Ethyl-Dow Chemical Company plant but missed and hit the Cape Fear River. The plant was the only one on the East Coast producing bromine from seawater for the use in aviation gasoline." Can you imagine if they had been more accurate that night?!
Kure Beach is home of some of the areas best restaurants as well as the Kure Beach pier which is a very well known landmark in this area! Fort Fisher which is just south of Kure Beach was a confederate fort during the American Civil War. It protected the vital trading routes of the Wilmington, NC port.
Today the Fort Fisher State Historic Site, which has been declared a national historical landmark, is part of the Fort Fisher State Recreation Area. This area features not only the Fort Fisher State Historic Site museum and visitors center but also the North Carolina State Aquarium at Ford Fisher.
Both the North Carolina Aquarium and the Fort Fisher State Historic site are great draws to the Pleasure Island area. They are both "must sees" for anyone visiting this area.
